Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 45 minutes
Total: 1 hour and 5 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp honey

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast becomes foamy.

  2. Add the whole wheat flour, salt, and honey to the bowl. Stir until the ingredients are fully combined and a sticky dough forms.

  3. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.

  4. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and place a Dutch oven with the lid on inside the oven to preheat as well.

  5. Once the dough has risen, carefully remove the hot Dutch oven from the oven. Use oven mitts as it will be very hot.

  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round loaf. Place the loaf into the preheated Dutch oven.

  7. Cover the Dutch oven with the lid and bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the lid and bake for an additional 15 minutes to achieve a crusty top.

  8. Remove the Dutch oven from the oven and transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
